9. When Landscape Imitates Art
I guess I know its actually the other way around, but in my development I actually think I liked landscape art (especially large format painted landscape) way before I actually liked landscape. That might be the combination of growing up in Chicago with more landscape art around than landscape but its left me in this place where I often look out at some stunning vista and think immediately of an artwork that helps me appreciate it even more.
Above are two examples both from hotel rooms. The first being a morning I woke up in Lima this year and looked out my window to see a slight improvement on one of Sugimoto’s amazing seascapes. The second was from my balcony in Queenstown New Zealand where I would spend the late afternoon’s looking out and thinking about the Fall of Icarus by Hans Bols (though at the time I remembered it being by Bruegel.) In the latter case they really were not that similar but the landscape from my window just begged for the flash of a boys leg as it sank beneath the water out of the corner of your eye.
