These things were actually encounters, real encounters.
                                                            -Pierre Berge

Last night I watched l’amour fou the documentary about the relationship between Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge. One of the most interesting pieces of the film for me was the celebration of collecting as a means of both experiencing the world and understanding an individual or relationship.

The film centers around the acquisition and subsequent de-acquisition of a lifetime of objects, art and objects d’art and rather than seeming entirely petty and venial it made the gathering of loved things into your life feel special, understandable and needed. It was in a sense a justification for why we in fact do need things and an exploration around the very real meaning of materialism.
