3. Diet and Exercise FAD’s

Right now its Soul Cycle and Organic Avenue (http://www.organicavenue.com/). Last year it was Cleanse and Raw, well branded and well marketed health products and services may ultimately be bad for our physical health but they’re so good at making us feel like we’re about to do something really amazing for your-self. I always fall for it and I always enjoy falling for it.

Just last week a cross-fit opened on our street in New York, we still haven’t gone but we will. Right now cross-fits are popping up everywhere fast, functional and global (the smallest towns in New Zealand had cross-fits on their main street) they are quasi cultish, quasi clubbish, quasi community center and impossible to ignore. The viral and deep way people make connections through Cross-fit, Soul-cycle and other studios and cleanses makes it feel less like a health fad and more like a replacement for other institutions that we used to use to make meaningful community and connection (Church, Boy-scouts, bowling etc.) Or, as one friend pointed out to me last night at Soul-Cycle, maybe its really just good marketing.
