7. The Way the French Make a Scene
Literally not figuratively. I just went to a show of the work and collection of Thierry Despont at a temporary space in TriBeCA run by the Marlborough Gallery. The show Cabinet of Curiousities was like inhabiting a mansion in a child’s Gothic dream. For me though it also just reminded me of how great the French are at “Mise en Scene” even without the theater or film back drop.
Whether its a market stall or a shop window or an amazing museum like The Museum of Hunting and Nature in the Marais. There is an artfulness and thoughtfulness to the way every moment is put together that seems inherent in the French way of doing.
I spent a significant part of my teenage years in France and I think sometimes this ability to make a scene has haunted me since then. People often accuse me of making vignettes in my space and poor David has to live with the fact that I think everything has a place it needs to be. I aspire to be as artful at making a scene in the way the French do.
