Last week David and I had the chance to do an evening session at the Altos de Chavon design school in the Dominican Republic. The chance to really explore and inhabit an art and design school in the heart of a mountainside jungle was both surreal and utterly odd. At some points it felt like we we’re living in the tempest an island where art and nature were intertwining, and in some points it was like being at an art school anywhere in the world.
The school is one of my favorite types of projects as it embodies optimism in its spreading of art and design to a generation that would not have it so consciously in their lives AND its making a generation of students, makers, designers and artists who by nature will bring optimism and change to their country.

Sometime in the second half of he century Dino de Laurentiis introduced Roberto Copa a paramount set designer who had worked for Fellinni amongst others to the owners of a sizable piece of land in the coast of the Domincan Republic. Over the years the set designer built a replica medieval Italian village high in the mountainside looking out over a stunning river valley.
Over the years the spot housed an art school a museum apartments and restaurants in a setting from Romeo and Juliet had it taken place in the jungle. Roberto lived on or near the property until his death finally forsaking his visits (hauntings) of the village when someone made the mistake of painting the wood trim an inauthentic brown.
